The Excelsior Fire District recently hired their first full-time Battalion Chief of Emergency Management & Technology. Please help us welcome, and congratulate, Troy Walsh!
A little bio on Battalion Chief Walsh:
I was born and raised in Victoria and have lived there for most of my life. While still in high school, I joined the Victoria Fire Department and pursued a technical college education in the fire service as a potential career. During that time, I also worked full-time with the City of Victoria Public Works Department, overseeing safety as well as the Streets and Storm Water Divisions.
After years of night school, and balancing the responsibilities of adult life that often delay education, I graduated from Hennepin Technical College in 2013 with an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science Technology, along with several other certifications and operational credentials related to the fire service.
In 2014, I was hired as a Loss Control Consultant with the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust, specializing in the fire service and public works. In my spare time, I instruct for several fire service organizations, leading department training and helping manage the Carver County Fire Academy. I continue to pursue ongoing education in public safety as a Certified Emergency Manager, a licensed firefighter, and an MBFTE-qualified instructor.
I married my wife, Stephanie, in 2016, and we welcomed our daughter, Alexandra, in 2019. Outside of work and Alexandra being in Kindergarten, we love the outdoors at a family cabin in northern MN, camping, concerts, traveling, or just a sunset cruise in the country in our side-by-side...
In October 2023, I retired from the Victoria Fire Department after 25 years of service. Around that same time, our family moved to East Union, just outside of Carver, to our forever home on five acres, and I joined the City of Carver Fire Department as a firefighter.
My dream was always to have a full-time career in the fire service. After my most recent birthday, I decided to pursue that dream and make a career change.
Today, I serve as a Battalion Chief with the Excelsior Fire District and still have the same drive and passion for the fire service that I had when I was a kid.
