The event is Thursday, October 9th from 6:00-8:30. Guest do arrive as early as 5:30. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 5:30 pm. at the latest and stay a least until 8:30 pm. When you arrive contact Peggy Cox or Susette Nesset at the fishing pond.

The Fire Prevention Fishing Pond is a very important activity at the open house. The fishing pond was created five years ago in order to encourage children and their parents to get involved in life saving and fire prevention activities. The children earn their bait for the fishing pond by learning how to call 9-1-1, answering questions at the H.C.M.C Burn Unit booth, and visiting the Excel Cycle bike safety booth. Once the children earn their bait they can fish for age appropriate fun toys and prizes. The fishing pond has proven to be an overwhelming success.

When you arrive you will receive any updated information. Greeters will be handing out fishing instructions to parents when they arrive.  There are three jobs at the fishing pond.

1. An Assistant Angler: The outside (the shore) of the fishing pond is where information is gathered on the young fishermen. The kids are asked their age and name so that an age and gender appropriate toy can be selected for their prize. Then assistance is given in helping them cast and take their fish (Prize) off of the hook (bucket). While you help them cast you say “This is Kellie and she id age 5” then you help them bring their catch over the fishing pond and send them on their way.

2. The catch of the day: Is inside (in the water) the fishing pond (behind the wall) when they get the information from the persons on the outside and a red bucket comes over the wall the paper bait is taken out of the bucket, and its replaces with an age and gender appropriate it with a prize.

3. The Water Patrol: This job is to make sure no one goes over their limit.  This person stands at the end of the line and places stickers on the children as they get in line to fish. Children are only allowed to fish once and this is a way to identify them. You can come up with any story you would like to encourage the children to wear their sticker all evening, like “children no wearing stickers will have to do dishes”. Once the evening progresses it is this persons job to turn away poachers (repeat fishers).

I encourage you to wear items the represent your company and/or city and name tags if you wish. If you are volunteering from another fire department, please feel free to wear a t-shirt or uniform that represents your department. The Open House is a great opportunity for citizens to meet their local business owners, firefighters from other departments, Council Members, and Mayors. You have been kind enough to volunteer your time to our event and we do want the citizens to know who our wonderful volunteers are and what company/city/organization they represent.  Please be aware that the Fire District does not allow any soliciting or campaigning at Fire District sponsored events. During election time candidates are welcome to wear items that identify them as a candidates and a campaign button. The Fire District does not allow businesses or those running for office to randomly hand out business and/or campaign materials, buttons, and business cards. We ask that business cards only be handed out upon a request from a person(s) attending a Fire District event.

Dinner is free, we serve grilled hotdogs, coffee, McDonalds Orange drink, cookies, and popcorn. Yes, it is a well balanced meal.

Citizen volunteers, please park in the Shorewood public works parking lot near the back of the lot. Firefighter’s vehicles should be already parked in the area. Off of county Road 19 you would turn North by the gray Fire District sign and follow the road straight through the gate. You can enter through the building.
