The Fire Prevention Open House starts when most family are planning dinner. There are only 2 ½ hours on one night a year that families can experience an evening packed with fire prevention and life safety activities and demonstrations. The original Excelsior Fire Department firefighters new they could make the Fire Prevention Open House more family friendly by adding a complementary dinner. Dinner was added to the evenings schedule and a kitchen and serving staff was born. When the Fire District moved into the new building in Shorewood there was room to expand and room to set up places for open house guess to sit down and enjoy dinner. In the past the guests had to balance hotdogs, drinks, and a kid or two on there arm, now they can have a free hand or two while their family settles in for a bite to eat. Thus a dining room staff was born.
Thank you for volunteering to join the ranks of the people who keep the tummies happy at the Open House. The jobs in the food service area are serving beverages and food items and keeping the serving tables and the dining tables cleared.
I encourage you to wear items the represent your company and/or city and name tags if you wish. If you are volunteering from another fire department, please feel free to wear a t-shirt or uniform that represents your department. You will need a baseball hat for the meet heath dept. requirements. The Open House is a great opportunity for citizens to meet their local business owners, firefighters from other departments, Council Members, and Mayors. You have been kind enough to volunteer your time to our event and we do want the citizens to know who our wonderful volunteers are and what company/city/organization they represent. Please be aware that the Fire District does not allow any soliciting or campaigning at Fire District sponsored events. During election time candidates are welcome to wear items that identify them as a candidates and a campaign button. The Fire District does not allow businesses or those running for office to randomly hand out business and/or campaign materials, buttons, and business cards. We ask that business cards only be handed out upon a request from a person(s) attending a Fire District event.
Dinner is free, we serve grilled hotdogs, coffee, McDonalds Orange drink, cookies, and popcorn. Yes, it is a well balanced meal.
Citizen volunteers, please park in the Shorewood public works parking lot near the back of the lot. Firefighter’s vehicles should be already parked in the area. Off of county Road 19 you would turn North by the gray Fire District sign and follow the road straight through the gate. You can enter through the building.
