EDITH - Escape Drills In The Home

Test your smoke detectors and test your children’s response.

In a recent report an alarming discovery was made regarding children’s response to the sound of a smoke detector. Many children under 13 years of age do not wake up to the sound of an alarm, especially in the first two hours of sleep.

Studies are being conducted by manufactures and government agencies. Until the studies are completed test your children’s response to the smoke detector in your home. Press the test during your children’s sleep to check when and how long it takes them to react. Make your findings part of your families Safe Escape Plan/E.D.I.T.H.

Here are some Fire Safety Tips

  • Smoke Detectors do save lives and you should have at least one on every floor, outside of all sleeping areas, and one in each bedroom.
  • Test your smoke detector once a month. On the day you make your house payment or pay your rent. The batteries could have been drained while you were out.
  • Change your batteries twice a year during daylight savings time. Change your smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks.
  • Have a Step-by-Step Family Fire Safety Plan and Practice, Practice, Practice it with your family. If you’re a parent make sure you incorporate your children’s reaction to the smoke detector into your plan. The more you practice your plan the better prepared your family will be if a fire occurs in your home.
