EXCELSIOR FIRE DISTRICT POLICY
DECORATIONS IN MULTI-FAMILY BUILDINGS
The Excelsior Fire District does not allow combustible decorations in hallways including hallway ceilings, walls, and doors, unless documentation is provided to prove that the decorations are flame retardant.
Decorations can not reduce the width of the hallway, reduce the visibility in the hallway, or obstruct use of the hallway.
Live Christmas trees are allowed in apartment units. Lights can be used on the trees. Please be advised that only UL listed lights are allowed. However, the Excelsior Fire District does not recommend the use of lights on trees unless they are artificial, flame retardant trees.
Please advise all tenants to water their tree everyday and to turn off the tree lights before leaving the apartment or before going to bed. Information of how to purchase and care for a live tree is avaliable from the Excelsior Fire District.
Live trees, wreaths, boughs, and other combustible decorations are not allowed on decks, balconies, patios, hallway doors, or in common areas, i.e. lobby. Artificial, flame retardant wreaths are allowed on the hallway doors, decks, and patios.
Christmas lights are not allowed on decks, balconies, or patios unless they are UL listed for outdoor use, plugged directly into an exterior outlet, and are not permanently fastened to the building.
Lights may not be linked together unless they are listed to do so and do not exceed the approved number of strings which may be linked together.
Please advise all tenants of these requirements. Call Fire Inspector Kellie Murphy-Ringate at 952-960-1692 if you have any questions.
