Here are the top 10 Fire Safety Tips to help you Stay Fire Smart
sparky_flying-sm
  1. Never leave cooking unattended
Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, or broiling. Always have a lid near by to slide over a pan in case of a grease fire on the stove top.
  2. Give space heaters space
Keep fixed and portable space heaters a least three feet away from anything that can burn. Space heaters must be plugged directly in to an outlet.
  3. Smokers need watchers
Encourage smokers to smoke outside. Provide a deep, sturdy ashtray a couple feet away from any combustibles including your home.
  4. Keep lighters and matches out of reach
Put them out of sight and out of reach of children. Teach children they are tools for adults and not toys.
  5. Inspect and respect electrical cords
Make sure electrical cords are not pinched behind furniture, under rugs, or stretched. Replace cracked, frayed, have broken plugs, or have loose connections. Do not use extension cords for fixed wiring or long term.
  6. Treat candles with care
Keep candles at least one foot away from anything combustible and never leave a candle unattended. Make sure you blow them out before you leave the room. Do candle checks before you go to bed.
  7. Have a home fire escape plan
Make a home escape plan and practice it a least twice a year so everyone is prepared for an emergency.
  8. Install smoke alarms
Put them on every level of your home, including the basement, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom in the home. It’s best to have interconnected alarms throughout the entire home.
  9. Test smoke alarms
Test them a least once a month. A reminder is when you make a house payment or pay rent. Change the batteries each time your change your clocks. Replace smoke detectors every 8-10 years.
  10. Get low in smoke
Go low where the cool clean air is. The hot, black icky smoke collects up high and can be lethal if you breathe it in.
